To help the dog better perform its functions a special clip was necessary. Thus, if it was used as a water-hunting dog an owner kept its coat rather short leaving a considerable amount of hair only on the chest to prevent it from getting cold while being in the water. And just the other way round, if the Poodle was supposed to participate in the show ring grooming demanded quite an effort.

The AKC registered the first Poodle in 1886. Ten years later, the Poodle Club of America was founded to take care of the welfare of the breed. However, it did not have any luck and had to be disbanded. In 1931, however, the Poodle Club of America was reorganized. It was agreed to use the standard developed in the UK. Nowadays, Poodles are good in obedience shows, and are used as therapy dogs, as well as excellent pets.
